Joliet Central High School

Joliet Central High was erected in 1901. It was built by the citizens of this community to improve the education, character and well being of its young people. As citizens of the 21st century we forget that schools like this were once unique. We forget that children once started work at the age of 10, working in steel mills, blast furnaces, coke plants, machine shops, with no safeguards for health or safety. We forget that people were lucky to live past the age of 40 years. We forget that towns such as this had a literacy rate of 20 to 25 percent. We forget that once children were lucky to attend school past the 6th grade. And, we forget that education was once a privilege for only the wealthy in our society, not a right for every young person who walks into our classrooms. We also forget this--ask anyone in America to say these two words--"High" and "School." Without hesitation they will combine those two words into one and say, "Highschool". For my grandparents generation, few of whom even graduated from grade school, they would always respond with two words and proudly call it a "HIGH school".
