Edges
"Peek-a-Boo"
by Alejandra Aguirre
To be on “Edge” is to be nervous, irritable. It is to be close to victory, or defeat. We can “Live on the Edge”, hone our minds to a “Razor’s Edge”, or develop something that is on the “Cutting Edge”. Businesses are on the “Edge of Bankruptcy”, nations on the “Edge of Collapse”, and a single ill received act can drive one to the “Edge of Despair”. We are always “On Edge”. There is a small line in all of us that defines mediocrity and excellence, good and bad, hope and despair, happiness and sadness, and the ultimate edge--the beginning and end of all things. We never see the Edge. It is always a feeling, one that drives us forward with optimism or disables us with catastrophic fear. It can happen in an instant or take a lifetime. Years ago I talked to an orthopedic surgeon. He spoke of The End of All Things. “The essence of Life is Breath”, he said. “We have millions of them, but only two are important--the first begins life, and the last ends it. We should fear neither.”

"A Sudden Corner"
by Mayra Pensdo
At some point, my head lead me by the hand and told me "Come here!! Go there!! This and that!! He and She and They and look who’s here!!" I yanked my hand back and told it "No, I’m more important than They and Who". Suddenly, I was caught in a corner by what we call Life. As I sat inside my head I told myself that maybe we are just blind in the moment. In order to create a door you must first have a wall. Where there’s a way in there is always a way out.
