Inside/Outside Project
This is part of our "Painting With Light" project. Mount a camera on a tripod, focus on the person, turn off all the lights, open the camera lens, and take a colored penlight and sculpt out the "Inside" of a person and then the "Outside".
"The Light Hidden Inside Us" by Jayla Allen-Hill
Some things are hidden inside of us and no one knows but us. As you walk through the streets and halls people only see what you allow them to see, and you only see others as they allow you to. They form their own perspectives of who you are from what they see, but is that the real you? People seem to hide who they really are inside of them and many don’t understand why. Is it due to fear of being judged and feel like an outcast? Or could it be your secret that you are scared to show, so you keep it all inside. The light hidden inside of us is our passion or talent. Why would you hide something like that? People hide the best things about themselves because you’re scared of what others will think about them and how they’ll treat them after showing someone else. This is how society has made us, we feel as if we need to fit in and be accepted by the people around us to live a happy life. Why should we care what others think if we like what we do or who we are?
"The Things We Don't See" by Liz Chavez
From the moment we are born
we are labeled. From the moment we are born we are stereotyped. Our first taste
of being stereotyped is our birth certificate. We become male, brown eyes, 8lbs,
1.5 ft. etc. As we grow up were continuously put into categories, Honors, Bad,
Smart, Kid, Teen, Ambitious, Quiet, Cute, Ugly, Gay, Mexican, White, Black,
Drop out, Middle schooler, Freshmen. More labels are to follow us as we grow
up. We grow in and out of labels, but at the same time do we really grow out of
these labels? Who gives us these tittles? Society? Who technically is
“society”? Do we give each other the titles? If so why, why do these titles
matter in life. What’s the difference between a smart kid and someone below
average? Can they both succeed at life or do these labels determine their
future .Who gives us these labels? Do they determine who we are? Of course not,
only we are able to say who we truly are. We are influenced by them, sometimes
we try to fulfill these labels but is that really who we are? Are we able to
actually know who we are inside if were constantly changing. We must not settle
for stereotypes and labels. We must show the world who we are. Shine the world
with who we are, what we really stand for.
"Underneath the Mask" by Melissa Chavez
What does
this photo represents to me? To me this is breaking away from who you’re
not. The placement of the hands explain
how as a human being we take more than what we can handle or simply just saying
“I have had it”. Later on we are struggling to fulfill everyone’s desires and
completely forget about what we want for ourselves. The different colors
represent all the types of masks we wear throughout our lives; many times,
depending on who we are around, we act differently. We don’t realize this
because we are so lost in this lie of being someone we are not. The darkness
that fills the background represents the void that we feel; we walk around not
knowing what we enjoy, because we have allowed ourselves to be fooled to like
what “They” like. The darkness can also represent those who have pushed us to
become the person they wanted us to become. Lastly, the closed eyes represent
hitting some type of rock bottom, finally having enough courage to break away
from this person that we have become. In
life we have to learn to distinguish what They want from what I want. What I want will make me happy, but most
importantly it will make me who I am.
"Waiting For Life" by Tony Delira
Young and reckless! These are the ideal teen’s journey.
Each youth dares to seek adventure. For those strong-willed, spontaneous
people, they do just that. They are the ones who dare to rollercoaster ride,
who dare to skydive. For the bookworms
and school-smart kids, we wait, we innocently wait for life. Though innocence
isn’t bad, sometimes it’s the safer alternative than risking it all. Being safe
isn’t ever wrong, it’s being prudent, and it’s testing the waters before diving
right in or even cannon-balling without intuition. We wait for something
amazing to happen, that’ll catch us by surprise and will give us the best rush
we’ve ever felt. To pump the adrenaline and enthusiasm through our body. But
that’s not how it works. My generation believes that everything should be handed
to us. From birth we are catered to. Today’s new technology gives us instant
gratification but it can overpower our judgment between need and want. By
nature, we want everything, even if we need nothing. And truthfully we don’t
wait for life. Life waits for us. Life waits for us to grab it by the hand and
to drag it through the countless number of adventures awaiting us. We make our
own chance, we use our own luck. With that chance, we have to take advantage of
it, regardless of the consequences, and rather appreciate the opportunity and
experience.
"Obstacles and Evil" by Jessica Floyd
As we grow we will always encounter obstacles and evil in
our life. But we can’t let that over power us and change who we are. There’s a
small part of us inside that keeps pushing us forward to keep fighting all the
bad stuff. People can bring you down to the point where you think that you are
going to break. You want to just give up and not have to worry about that thing
that is make so upset or down. You’re going to go through life with the hard
times trying to pull you down and the good stuff seems to never be there.
Family, friends, school, jobs, relationships, or whatever else is taking a toll
on you is always going to get better. In life there is a time when you are
going to lose friends, family and or loved ones, but you can’t hold on to them forever.
They’re going to be a point in time were you are going to find that person,
hobby, or whatever it could be to get your mind off of the hard time life
throws at you. You are going to come out of that dark place and show the people
who you really are.
"Losing Your Happiness" by Tori DeBenedetti
Why do people have masks? Is it to hide behind who they
truly are? Is it because they are scared of letting people in? People usually have
two sides to them. To some people their mask is happiness but really underneath
its exhaustion. We tend to hide the things we don’t want to get out because we
don’t want to deal with the problem. Such as school or work, maybe both. With
all the work people have to get done it’s hard not to be exhausted and even
harder not to show it. I believe people have masks because they are afraid to
face their own reality. People want to hide away from the things they don’t
want to face or people they don’t want to deal with. So they show nothing other
than a smile, behind that smile is something far different. Not dealing with
your problem sooner than later could be a bad thing. You’re going through your
life making these decisions about happiness.
If you only fake it you could lose your knowledge on what happiness
really feels like. Not only would you lose the meaning of happiness but also
the meaning of yourself.
"Living in the Light" by Alexis Williams
Who we are and what we stand for isn’t always what the
people around us want. They want to be able to influence us and mold us into
what they think is acceptable. People judge us when we aren’t what they think
we should be. We hide in the darkness, secretly being the person that we really
are. By trying to make those people happy, we make ourselves miserable in the
process. Until the day comes when we finally find the light that that we have
been hiding from, that will lead us into the life that we really want to live
and the person that we really want to be. We will be able finally come to terms
with the things that people say and how they try to make us into their vision. We
can finally stand up to those people and show them that just because we aren’t
what they feel is acceptable for society, we are still humans, and just because
we are different doesn’t make us monsters. We can finally live in the light and
thrive, being the person we want to be and to ignore the people that still don’t
agree with who and what we are.
